Abstract:

Two letters by Thomas Forbes (April 1849 at Rio Janeiro and March 1850 at North fork of American River) describe voyage from New York, mining experiences, Sacramento flood, Chinese mining camp, etc. Two letters by M. Brainard (May and Dec. 1852) describe difficulties crossing the Isthmus, impressions of San Francisco, mining experience, etc. Typed transcripts also included.
